My definition was fairly conceptual and existed in cerebral state, less grounded in concrete examples than many of the models encountered during this course. I wrote initially, "A great leader is defined by many intangibles. A leader brings out the best in those he or she leads. A leader inspires others to become better. Leaders are respected, often admired, and even loved - or feared. Most importantly, a leader makes those who follow him greater than the sum of the individuals themselves. Leaders bring out this synergistic effect to multiple the potential of people and lead them to become themselves great." While I continue to agree with my definition and especially the characteristics demonstrated by the great ones, there was certainly room to grow as I learned about the various theories of leadership.Above all, I appreciated the Contingency Theory and the departure of their interpretations from the other theories.
