States Requiring Foreign Language in High SchoolThe states on this image have some sort of requirement when it comes to foreign languages. However, there are many exceptions throughout this list. The foreign language requirements can be switched for computer classes or the fine arts in some cases. Other states have graduation pathways that require some foreign language but this is not for all students. Other states are debating the foreign language requirement laws. Tennessee as of 2009-2012 9th graders requires that they take two foreign language classes. However, a student can opt out if a parent signs an affidavit saying that the student will not go to a college or university. If the student later decides they will attend a college or university, they must do the required foreign language classes. Positive SideStudies have shown that students that learn a second language usually improve in math and English. SAT scores, along with school grades, are used to prove this point. They also show that the longer the students study a foreign language the stronger they get in these other subjects. Another benefit of studying a second language is more job opportunities. Many companies are now global and they want to hire people that can interact with people that dont speak English. Learning a second language also promotes learning about another culture.
