Instead of treating juveniles like adults and processing the juvenile through the criminal justice system juveniles were subject to a juvenile justice process that is geared towards rehabilitating juvenile delinquents instead of locking them up like adult offenders. While both the adult and the juvenile offender are afforded certain due processes rights the juvenile and adult court processes are distinctly different. Overview of the Juvenile Justice System The juvenile justice system developed out of the reform of the correctional system during the 1800's. In the past all offenders, women, men, and children were subject to the same criminal justice process and where thrown into prisons to await the punishment they would receive for their crime. Children were placed in adult prison and treated like criminals. The juvenile justice system developed out of a need for change and societies recognition of the developmental differences between a juvenile and adult offender.
