Jake OwensSeptember 27, 2014Poetry ExamEnglish 250Of all the poetry readings we have done in class, Adrienne Rich's "Diving into the Wreck" is my favorite. I enjoyed it because of the descriptive language. I also enjoyed it because the poem has the potential to be digested from multiple viewpoints. In my opinion, it most clearly holds a literal meaning and a figurative meaning. If it is being read with a literal view "Diving into the Wreck" begins with Rich preparing for her journey: "I put on the body-armor of black rubber / the absurd flippers / the grave and awkward mask." When you're reading the poem you see that the subject is preparing for a dive with the necessary gear. She continues on to write about beginning her journey: "I go down / My flippers cripple me / I crawl like an insect down the ladder / and there is no one / to tell me when the ocean / will begin."
