Chapter 10
Summary

The arrival of his mother sends Grey into a confusion. He is hurriedly trying to dress up while demanding that Ana also puts on some clothes to meet his mother (James 118). He leaves the room and tells Ana that he expects to see her in five minutes. She is worried about the clothes she will wear and he directs her to his own clothes. She has to choose what she sees fit. Fortunately, her shirt seems fine and she fits herself into her clothes. However, she cannot wear her dirty panties. Therefore, she decides to take one of Grey’s boxers. Fully dressed, she goes into the bathroom and makes her hair look better (James 119). Lastly, he puts on her jacket, and it hides the marks formed for the tie knots.

Grey introduces Ana to Grace Trevelyan-Grey, his mother. Mrs. Grey is overjoyed to see Ana. She seems to like her immediately. They talk for a while and she leaves them since it is clear that Grey already has plans. Together, Grey and Ana drive back to Portland, and they make a stop at a place near Olympia to eat (James 125). The food is delicious. They talk and Grey opens up about his experience with his mom’s friend, Mrs. Robinson. Ideally, she is the one who taught him about domineering, and he had the experienced from the age of fifteen. This information saddens Ana, but she digs in deeper to find out more about this man, the one she likes. They arrive at Vancouver and he parks the car outside Ana’s apartment. It seems that Kate is home. Grey kisses Ana’s arm and then her forehead (James 130). They will meet again on Wednesday for dinner, but until then Ana has the contract to read and research on. In addition, Grey has allowed her to ask Kate about sex, but she must only disclose what they did without adding the extras.

Grey leaves and Ana goes into the apartment. She finds that Kate is packing, and they hug and chat about their weekends. Kate seems to have liked Elliot and they are meeting again on Saturday. Ana talks about José and his behavior at the bar. She talks to him over the phone, and he sounds jealous. Nevertheless, he apologizes for his actions, and Ana affirms that they cannot be more than just friends since she sees him as the brother she never had (James 134). Ana also receives invites to interviews and she is happy. Together with Kate, they spend the rest of the evening watching TV and drinking cheap red wine. They are both tired and they retire to their rooms. Finally, Ana decides to look at the contract (James 136).

Analysis

The behavior shown by Grey upon the arrival of his mother shows that their relationship is quite restrained and distant. However, he is comfortable introducing Ana to his mother, and this serves as a way of changing his mother’s opinion of him being gay. Mrs. Grey likes Ana immediately considering her charming behavior and her beauty. She is also happy that her son is finally dating a woman, and he is not gay, as she had perceived. It is clear that Grey’s happiness matters to his mother, and she marks an effort to stay close to him. Besides, she is an understanding individual since she makes no demands after realizing that Grey already has plans with Ana.

At the food place near Olympia, Grey share his experience with Ana, as a way of showing her that he is also vulnerable. He needs her to understand his situation, as it is not a self-chosen path but rather a forced one. Ideally, he is trying to explain to Ana his reasons for wanting her that much. The author reveals Kate as a caring individual considering that she keeps reaching out to find out about Ana. She is also in love with Elliot and she is not ashamed of sharing her happiness with Ana. Talking about her first sexual experience is Kate’s way of showing Ana how lucky she is to have Grey. Nevertheless, Ana is still withholding information from Kate, an indicator that she can keep her promises.
