A Higher Loyalty
James Comey
Contributed by Jack Shields
Chapter 14
Summary

"We aren't the kind of killers that Putin is." This statement that Comey made to the president appeared to have stung the president, while at the same time confirming that Comey was not loyal to the president. The president was not impressed that Comey had questioned his judgment. When Comey went back to the FBI office, he informed the staff members that their meeting with the president had not ended amicably and that there was no personal relationship left. Later on in another meeting at the White House, the president made an incredible request to Comey. He said, " I hope you can see your way clear to let this go, to letting Flynn go. He is a good guy. I hope you can let this go." The president was asking Comey to stop the investigations on Flynn's alleged contact with the Russians. It was an incredibly difficult situation for the director, knowing that their relationship with the president had deteriorated. Comey says, "it was important not to infect the investigative team looking at Flynn—and more broadly at alleged Russian coordination with the Trump campaign during the 2016 election—with the president's request." The statement confirms the position of the director that they were not willing to compromise the investigations on the demand of the president.

Analysis

In this encounter, Comey against demonstrated his loyalty to his duties and an unmatched determination to the right thing. At a time when there is pressure from the president to drop the investigation of Flynn and his involvement in the Russian scandal, Comey has demonstrated his fidelity to the rule of law and independence of the office. In many cases, President Donald Trump south to interfere with the independence of the Office of the Director of FBI. There is no time in which Comey wilted to the pressure and followed the demands of the president. When the president eventually fired Comey, it was because of Comey's refusal to pledge loyalty to the president. Comey was determined to serve the country as honest and as justly as possible.
