Chapter 16
Summary

Ed believes that Jane and Celeste are emotionally damaged, to which Madeline responds in her defense. She sees Celeste as not only beautiful and rich, but also a happily married woman (Moriarty 85-86). Watching Jane holding hands with Ziggy brings back a flood of memories from the years when Madeline was a single mother. Because Nathan had abandoned them, she seems to believe that Abigail loved her more than she loved her father. However, Abigail’s deep love for both Nathan and Bonnie seems to hurt Madeline. Ed consoles Madeline and teasingly offers to kill Nathan for Madeline, and blame Bonnie.

Analysis

The author focuses on Madeline and Ed discussing Jane and Celeste. He believes that the two women are carrying emotional baggage from bad relationships. Madeline, on the other hand, is truly hurt by her daughter for seeming to have greater preference for her father. After Nathan abandoned them, it used to be only Madeline and Abigail. But now, all Abigail wants is to spend time with Nathan, Bonnie, and Skye.
