Chapter 21
Summary

Upon their early arrival for school pick-ups, Jane asks Celeste whether she plans to return to her previous occupation now that the twins are at school. Deep down, Celeste is not sure whether she wants to work or simply be a stay-at-home mom. Both ladies agree that they are unfit and decide to find time and walk together when the children are at school (Moriarty 113).

Madeline receives a call from her boss, Samira, to discuss marketing for a new production of King Lear (Moriarty 114). Samira also mentions that she has Disney on Ice tickets if Madeleine is interested. She accepts, and afterwards realize that the event will be held on the same day as Amabella’s birthday party.

Analysis

The author seems to suggest that Celeste is unsure of what she wants to do, now that her twins are at school. Although Jane’s life is simple, Celeste appears to admire this about Jane, being able to live peacefully with her son. The author also focuses on Madeline, who — in a prior chapter — had promised Renata a war for failing to invite Ziggy to Amabella’s birthday party. It is quite apparent that Madeline is ready to keep her word when she accepts the Disney on Ice tickets, which she gives out to the children in the kindergarten except Skye, her ex-husband’s daughter.
