Chapter 23
Summary

Jane, Celeste, and Madeline, along with their children, are watching Disney on Ice. Madeline had achieved inviting eight of the children to attend the show. Although she was doing this for Ziggy, she feels that she had increased the rift with Renata. Madeline wonders if Celeste is okay since she looks tired and pale (Moriarty 121). The scene ends with Celeste contemplating on leaving Perry.

Jane is at home talking to her mother on the phone. She is searching for Harry the Hippo, a class toy that goes home with a different child during the weekend (Moriarty 121). Unfortunately, Jane had misplaced the toy during the Disney on Ice outing and is worried about the other parents’ reaction when they hear that Ziggy had lost it (Moriarty 125).

Analysis

It is clear that Celeste continues to struggle with the thought of leaving her husband, despite the continuing violence. Madeline successfully escalates the rift between Renata and herself, to the point where a parent had to be in either “Team Madeline” or “Team Renata”.
