Chapter 27
Summary

Celeste comes home and blames herself for going against Perry. She wonders about whether their marriage would have been different if she had not raised her hand to hit Perry during their first fight. She can hear her cleaners’ laughter (a Korean couple) from upstairs, which makes her envious of their relationship (Moriarty 140). She puts down her tea and takes her AmEx (American Express) card out of her wallet, opens her laptop and donates a total of $25,000 to charity.

Celeste thinks back to a time in university when one of her classmates did not want to be around her when she was experiencing a rough day, even though Celeste was beautiful and happy. This made Celeste stop complaining and feel gratitude for the comfortable life provided to her by Perry.

Upon receiving Perry’s banquet of flowers, which has a card on it saying “I love you. I’m sorry”, she finds the nerve to type the words “marriage counselor” into Google (Moriarty 143). However, Celeste stops and types “domestic violence” instead.

Analysis

Celeste is still struggling with the idea of leaving Perry, and continues to blame herself for triggering the conflict. As the chapter ends, Moriarty seems to suggest to its reader that Celeste has finally found the nerve to seek professional help.
