Big Little Lies
Liane Moriarty
Contributed by Greta Venegas
Chapter 59
Summary

Perry is about to leave for a meeting and informs Celeste that Madeline would pick the kids up from school. She cannot comprehend how Perry could act so sweet to her one minute, and hurt her badly the next (Moriarty 280). Before leaving, Celeste reminds Perry about when he was bullied for being a fat little kid wearing glasses. He squeezes her hand and says it was very bad. Celeste asks whether Perry’s anger is related to that incident, to which he notes that Saxon had come to his aid (Moriarty 281). Finally, she wonders why Saxon became a rapist if he was never harassed at school.

Analysis

Moriarty reveals that Perry was also bullied when he was eight years old for being a fat boy who wore glasses. This probably explains why Perry is always aggressive and infuriated when he feels disrespected or humiliated.
