Chapter 8
Summary

Mrs. Allerton tells Tim that she had invited Poirot to join them at their dinner table, and Tim is taken aback by her mother’s decision. Over dinner, Mrs. Allerton suggests that they attempt to identify all the passengers on the manifest. When they come across the names of  Linnet and Simon Doyle, she feels that they are the lions of the trip, and this sparks Tim's interest. When Mrs. Allerton describes Mr. Pennington as handsome, Tim becomes annoyed.

Later, Poirot meets Jackie as he heads to his cabin to retire for the evening. He tells Jackie that she is headed down a dangerous route. As he tries to fall asleep in his cabin, Poirot overhears Simon’s voice, repeating what he had said when they were at Shellal: “We‘ve got to go through with it now.” Poirot is not happy.

Analysis

There is something about Poirot that Tim despises. This may be an indication that Tim is hiding something hence the reason he is not comfortable around a detective. He seems to be afraid that Poirot may discover something about him thus the reason why he also does not want Poirot to be close to his mother. On the other hand, Poirot is convinced that Linnet and Simon are facing imminent danger on the steamer. Poirot confirms this when he speaks to Jackie, who seems to be hatching a plan to make sure Linnet and Simon do not stay together. The mystery surrounding Tim’s dislike for Poirot could hold the key to the fatal shootings to come. Simon seems to be hatching a plan, but at this point one cannot tell who is his accomplice since only his voice is heard by Poirot.
