Chapter 13-22 - From School
Summary

At this stage in Kevin’s life, attention from the opposite sex is of utmost importance. After a trip to the barbershop, he initiates his first conversation with a girl. Soon, he learns of the “big shoe” myth and tries to use it to charm girls but fails miserably.  He then tries to form a boy band to be more popular, which also fails. Accepting his place in the popularity pecking order, he settles for the “lonely girls in the library,” still fails, and ends up finding Tamikag.

This drive to succeed also helps ensure he makes the basketball team. Surprisingly, he doesn’t give his swimming and classwork  the same effort as basketball, but being the loser on a winning swim team made him change tact. Eventually his shift toward responsibility and acquired tolerance to whoppings earns him contingent freedom, and he makes every effort to be worthy of more.  As he gets more freedom, he also gains access to new clothing and shoes. He almost loses his new belongings in a burglary incident, but get lucky as the burglar only runs off with his mom’s cash. It turns out his dad, now addicted to drugs, had accidentally let the burglar in the house, and Kevin was in the dark about it despite everyone else knowing what had happened. In his defense, Mr. Witherspoon insists it may have been Kenneth whom he had let into the house instead of the burglar.

Ultimately, Mr. Witherspoon’s capacity for secrecy is mimicked by Kevin when he maintains secrecy and respect for the women who gave him what he desperately wanted, sex. And though his first sexual experience was botched, he made up for it with a second first attempt and more opportunities over time. Suddenly, an artillery accident reunites Kenneth with the rest of the Harts and he returns home with his savings to set up a barbershop. However, Mr. Witherspoon shatters Kenneth’s dreams when he sells off all his equipment for drugs. Meanwhile, Kevin applied his “less is best” ideology toward the SATs which hurts his college prospects.

Analysis

“You can have a sense of humor about your shortcomings.” Coming from a guy challenged with height, this statement shows self-acceptance and perseverance. This attitude was a means to ensure he had the confidence to explore his sexuality.

Meanwhile, we see that adults indulge in self-destructive tendencies and have to keep learning not just how to raise their children but how to be better themselves. However, pride, chauvinism, and ego all have a way of deterring personal development as advice becomes insult. But leave it to Kevin to shrug his shoulders at everything.
