I Cant Make This Up - Life Lessons

Chapter 97-99 - Life Lessons from Legacy Building
Summary

Comparing his children’s lives to his own, Kevin makes it a crucial point to teach them that they can take control of their lives by taking action and not just counting on luck. He also teaches them to use the tools they have. Sure, Chris Paul or David Beckham would be superb soccer coaches, but their basic coach at camp is perfectly fine too.

In this same spirit, Kevin is never complacent and after achieving success in comedy, he shifts his goals to  other successes. He eventually becomes a CEO, a Nike sponsored non- athlete, and scriptwriter and film director. For him, life is a pack of cards, a game where picking out the aces requires the best possible combination of persistence, patience, class, commitment, learning, passion-centered competitiveness, positivity, and discomfort. Feeling discomfort counts as reassurance against complacency.

Moreover, he makes it clear that the things we enjoy the most are probably the talents we have yet to discover and share with the world. But, as is to be expected from a comedian, he makes it clear that if his advice doesn’t work, his reader should remember his occupation and probably listen to someone else - either someone wiser than him or a professional.

Analysis

Parenting is a skill and like any other, it can be learned and modified to suit the situation and the audience at hand. Similar to parenting, goals can be set and once achieved should be modified to ensure sustained success and continued development. However, these insights only come from experiences that also include failure and a strong will to succeed.
