Themes
Themes are described as ideas that dominate a particular piece of literature. In almost all cases, pieces of literature will be centered a theme or a number of them.
Drug and Drug Abuse

At the onset of the book, Kevin Hart introduces the readers to his dad, Mr Witherspoon, and explores his alcoholic tendencies as well as drug-related arrests. Later on, in the book, his dad becomes a cocaine addict, an addiction he confesses was due to sexual exploration and desire for women he otherwise would not have had. Though Kevin had no opportunity to engage in drug use as a young boy, his brother tried his hand at becoming a drug dealer, a situation that ended abruptly. In his adult life, Kevin finds himself incapacitated from marijuana abuse as well as alcohol abuse. While both he and his father get into fights and end up with broken homes, they both try to kick their habit. Besides drugs and alcohol addiction, the book also highlights addiction to gambling, betting, sex, and video games.

Hardships, Rejection, and Hard Work

Consistent in his first literary work, Kevin Hart presents the facts of life and the challenges it offers to everyone including teenagers, young adults, married couples, managers, promoters, comedians, actors, wives, children, and polygamous households. However, by making his experiences an example, Kevin also makes a case that these challenges are meant to strengthen our resolve if only we choose the interpretation that best suits our growth and keep persistent in our dreams.

Sex, Sexuality, and Promiscuity

Once Kevin Hart hits puberty, all he could think about was getting the attention of girls at his school in a bid to explore his sexuality and “become a man.” While he later discovered that this is a fallacy and that sex had nothing to do with becoming a man, he had tasted the forbidden fruit and could not have enough of it. Like his father before him, he ended up having a string of sexual partners before and after he got married and even after he has children with his wife. This promiscuity, while a result of his “toxic” relationship with his wife, was a personal choice that led to their separation and divorce, mimicking his parent’s relationship.
