Themes
Themes are described as ideas that dominate a particular piece of literature. In almost all cases, pieces of literature will be centered a theme or a number of them.
Machismo

There is a strong sense of masculinity in the book, given the people that the author has worked with before, and has continued working with, in the culinary industry. He even mentions this in the book, “Where did she come from?…not amazed that a woman could do the job, but that any other than a thirty-five-year-old Ecuadorian mercenary could do it so stone-cold…”. This statement shows the reader that both the author and the culinary industry is accustomed to male-dominated kitchens that seems opposed to having women.

Owner’s Perspective

The book is written from a first-person perspective, that is, by the author himself. This can be seen in his style of communication while talking to the audience directly. He explains his experiences directly from a first-person perspective. The statement, “Earlier, I implied that all bartenders are thieves. This is not entirely accurate…” shows that the author is speaking on a first-person basis.

Lives of Teenagers

Anthony Bourdain gives a detailed explanation of his life as an undisciplined young man when he turned 18, and still a teenager: he does drugs with his fellow friends; and they go vacationing in Provincetown, where they stay for a while working at the Dreadnaught. Bourdain lives his life carefree, in a way that describes a typical teenager’s life without responsibilities, given that the focus is the purchase of drugs, food, and lodging for the place they reside at during their vacation.

Importance of Family

Bourdain considers the people he work with as family, and even goes on to mention that he would rather give up his position if it means that other kitchen staff will be booted. He is also protective of his wife and his then-girlfriend, given that he spends little time with either of them as compared to the dedication to his work.

Growth in the Culinary Industry

Anthony Bourdain insists on the importance of focusing on being part of this industry when one is motivated enough. Besides the obvious perks, this also means that one must be ready to endure the pain and suffering that comes with it. Growth takes time, and one should be both capable and patient enough to reach that point, as it does not happen overnight.
