Chapter 14
Summary

With the trip coming to its conclusion, they return to the United States. Mr. Lancaster meets them at the airport and takes them back home (Green 61). During this time, Hazel talks to Gus about his belief regarding afterlife issues. She realizes that he has the faith in an afterlife, something beyond their lives here on Earth. They also meet Isaac, who has become completely blind. Although he says that he does not think about Monica every day, she has never made contact since, which upsets them all. Gus, in particular, finds Monica’s behavior rather intolerable, and he asks Isaac to join him in buying eggs. He then tells Isaac to hit Monica’s car with the eggs, and the actions seem mesmerizing and comical to the onlookers except Monica’s family.

Analysis

Hazel has realized that the negative viewpoint of An Imperial Affliction may not be the only or most correct point-of-view. Death does not necessarily hurt those around, but it is a way of life. In addition, her father has already read the book, and he says that there is more to life than death. He believes in the afterlife, and this gives Hazel high hopes and determination. Further, her relationship with Gus has developed, and they feel at greater ease with each other that before. Also, Gus has started his new treatment, and the medication is affecting his speech, resulting in slower-paced conversations. Nonetheless, he still finds the courage to fight injustices, and he plans and executes a mission that helps Isaac take revenge against Monica for her unfair treatment. This completes his heroic actions, and Hazel manages to take a picture of the person she initially fell in love with, Gus.
