Chapter 21
Summary

This chapter talks about Gus’s death, and Hazel’s reaction after the occurrence. Gus dies eight days after hearing his eulogies from both Hazel and Isaac. After his death, Gus’s mother calls Hazel to notify her. In turn, she calls Isaac and informs him of the same. Soon after that, Hazel realizes that she has no one else to turn to, and sinks into pain and anger. She decides to listen to the various messages left for Gus by the people who never managed to spend time with him. Hazel then tries to show the people who did not know Gus well his real character by posting that he did not die from cancer, but rather from a battle with human consciousness. Her post gets lost in the numerous comments and views from different people, and instead of attacking people she will never meet, Hazel seeks comfort from her parents. From them, she receives the comfort she seeks as they hug for hours, thus making her feel better.

Analysis

The pretense, shown by people who do not even know Gus, frustrates Hazel adversely. She is unsettled that many people showed concern for Gus at a moment when he does not need the attention. Her post is meant to clear up the air for those people, yet her efforts are in vain. Gus, in his death, receives the attention he wanted while he was alive. Due to this, Hazel ends up experiencing immense pain, thus turning to her parents who are ready to offer her any support necessary, thus comforting her.
