Chapter 10

While Elizabeth-Jane waits to be acknowledged outside Henchard’s office, Joshua Jopp, the corn manager who Henchard has originally been expecting, finally arrives, but Henchard informs him that Farfrae has already filled the position. Elizabeth-Jane takes her turn in front of Henchard, and upon hearing her news, he quickly puts together that she is unaware of the tragedy but that Susan is still alive. He invites her into his home and after several more questions, he tells her that he wishes to see her mother and includes some money (the exact amount of five guineas). Henchard is temporarily shocked in case the two women turn out to be imposters, but since he will see Susan that evening, the truth will be revealed soon enough.
