Summary

Duncan’s conversation with Augie continues. Augie tells Duncan that Sulliman does not want a ransom but wants to destroy America. Augie and Nina, on the other hand, are trying to save America explaining why the met up with Duncan. The president asks how long it will take the virus to detonate. Augie tells him that all he knows is that it will explode on Saturday. Saturday is the day that follows, and the president is worried. However, he feels dizzy and almost fainted. He tells his secret service to call Carolyn who would get his doctor to attend to Duncan’s condition. The vice president’s chief of staff knocks at the vice president’s bedroom and asks her to see the news headlines. The headlines state that president Duncan is missing. Katherine is optimistic that she will be America’s next president. Brandt summons Carolyn and asks her of the president’s whereabouts. Carolyn tells Brandt that she is not at liberty to say but claims that she knows the president’s location. Besides, Carolyn tells Brandt that the president is safe and that he did not go missing due to his impeachment. Sulliman goes around his house and rests on a chair on the balcony. He lights up a cigarette and takes his computer to read the news. He learns of the shooting at the Capitol neighborhood and thinks Duncan is buying time. He asks about Alpha, who is Nina, and Sulliman receives the information of his death. On asking about Beta, Augie, he is told that Augie is with the Americans. Sulliman claims that only Augie can try to figure a means of stopping the virus. Dr. Lane arrives and gives the president some medication while also putting him on IV. The president wakes up, and he realizes it is on Saturday and that he needs to continue with his mission. The doctor stops him but after a conversation allows him to go but with his IV. Besides, he gives him strict instructions of remaining seated without much physical exertion for twenty-four hours. Duncan talks to Carolyn on the phone who tells him that the attack may have started. Duncan calls Alex and orders for Marine One. Duncan has some conversations with Carolyn and Liz, the FBI director. The two inform the president that an airplane plant for a defense contractor had been blown up. While the pipeline in the country had run out of gas. Carolyn believes that the attack was set to happen on that day. Duncan orders Alex to take Augie to the Marine One and asks Carolyn and Liz why the attackers would blow up a defense contractor’s airplane plant. The president urges Augie if he knew about the attack on the defense contractors airplane plant. Augie claims he had no idea of the attack. The president asks him severally if Sulliman can hack into the pipeline system and that of the defense contractors. Augie agrees that Sulliman has the men to do all his dirty work for him. Augie claims that he had no idea of the plans to hack the pipeline system. The president drinks some coffee to calm him down from the effect of the medication that he is having on Marine One. He lands, and he is a room where one of his agents tell him to remove the IV since it is near completion. Later, he gets information telling him that the attackers’ target was not the defense contractors’ airplane plant. Duncan heads to the basement and is on a video call where he receives information that the defense contractor’s plane was not the target but a laboratory responsible for carrying out a diagnosis to identify forms of a threat of any diseases. The president is about to receive news from the gas explosion when Alex informs him that the Israeli prime minister has arrived.

Analysis

Augie has left the sons of jihad, and he understands the virus could hurt America and its citizens badly. His conscience cannot let him see Sulliman destroy America, which shows that Augie has a good conscience. The state of America is making Duncan forego his health and treatment and save his country. He loves America evident from these chapters. Brandt cares about being president more than the missing president. The news entices her but worries her since she does not know Duncan’s plans and whereabouts. Carolyn is loyal to the president. Despite the threats by the vice president, Carolyn does not disclose Duncan’s location. Sulliman is determined to destroy America. He confirms that he knows Augie implying that Augie was one of the sons of Jihad. However, Augie can figure something out, as per the chapter that could stop the virus. The president is worried about America and cares less about his health and occurrences that led to his fainting. He is scared that the illness could affect his country grievously. The attack seems to have started due to the explosions observed in America. However, it is impossible to tell yet, which makes a reader want to read the other chapters. The president is worried that the attack may have commenced due to the recent hackings of the defense contractors system and the pipeline as well. He questions Augie, who appears to tell the truth that he does not know of the plans. The president knows he has to remain calm for the sake of his country despite the fatigue caused by his medication and transfusion. He wants to be in a sober mind to make the right decisions for his country. These chapters introduce a reader to the fact that the president had summoned the Israeli prime minister to his secret location. However, a reader does not know what Duncan will discuss with the prime minister.
