Part 4 Chapter 53
Summary

Increased fear over Churchill’s safety was a constant conversation as London was being bombed. Churchill often scoffed at the idea of taking shelter during these raids and would even watch the battles from various rooftops. This would prompt others to take multiple measures reinforcing the Prime Minister’s offices and residences from attacks. Meanwhile, Beaverbrook took the defense of aircraft production very seriously and would fight against anything, including false-alarm air raid sirens. On the offensive side, the Allied attack on Dakar failed and led to a retreat that included an influx of criticism against Churchill and his government. Finally, Pamela Churchill gave birth to her son on October 10.

Analysis

What does it say about Churchill to often refuse to seek shelter from the air raids? First, it showcases that Churchill, like many others, was curious to witness the attacks and bask in the destruction the Germans have caused. Whether this incorporates a sense of revenge and anger is one thing, but Churchill shows the leader he is by not putting himself out of harm’s way. For some, it is seen as heroic, for others, it is mysterious because the possible death of Churchill would result in absolute chaos for the British people when they need stable leadership the most.
