Chapter 122-130
Summary

Natasha feels strange while walking with Daniel in her neighborhood. People are staring, and it bothers her; but not him. All he knows is that he loves her and that overcomes everything else. They go to her apartment, and Peter is playing reggae music. Her mom wants to complain about calling her but stops when she notices Daniel. Natasha introduces him as her boyfriend, and Peter seems happy considering that his sister has never brought a boy home before. Samuel comes in and starts arguing with his daughter, and Daniel can see how much they are alike.

Natasha continues to scold her father for the things he had done to them. She now understands disappointment clearly. Hearing her words, he starts to cry, and she tells him that he has to at least try when they get back to Jamaica. She sounds like Daniel, and her words bring the family closer. Both Daniel and Natasha get into a separate cab from Peter and the parents. They discuss the remaining questions from the research, and finally she manages to confess that she loves him. They also do the four-minute part of the experiment by looking deep into each other’s eyes. They think of different things, with Daniel focusing on the future, and Natasha looking at the past that brought them together. They then kiss, and even though they can see the beginning, they cannot see the end of their love. Later, she is on the plane, and her mother is holding her hand, assuring her that everything will be okay. Daniel’s parents have been calling, and he knows they will be upset when he gets home. He wonders if he is making a mistake, but sees it as his mistake to make.

In “Time and Distance: A Measured History”, the narrator lays out the different ways the different individuals turn out, and the separation that occurs to Natasha and Daniel. It takes them long to let go, but they eventually do. They often think about each other, and the specific moments that happened on that single day they met in New York, memories of which they find delight in. The final chapter, titled “Epilogue. Irene: Alternate History”, the narrator talks about Irene, the lonely security guard, who used to work at the USCIS building. The message Natasha left thanking her had changed her life, which actually did away her suicidal intentions. She quit her job as a guard and became a flight attendant. It is ten years later and she notices someone who looks familiar. It is Natasha — and Daniel is on the plane too. The book ends with the two meeting once again.

Analysis

These sections focus on parting ways, the normality of life and fate. As they are walking to her apartment, Natasha feels concerned about the people who are staring at the two of them, and she wants to be sure that it does not bother him. Her inquisitive nature affirms her behavior of being in control and having the power to plan. It seems like they are meant to be, but the distance between them, after she moves back to Jamaica, separates them. This is because they cannot see each other or spend time together; and with that kind of relationship, they were deemed to drift apart. However, that single day they spent together changed a lot of things in both their lives, leading them to focus on their passions.

The chapter on Irene is a way of informing the reader about the simple things that people do and their importance on other people’s lives. Just a simple thank you from Natasha transformed the way Irene viewed life, and it gave her meaning and purpose to continue living. Although the separation of Natasha and Daniel is sad, the author reaffirms the concept of fate by letting them meet again, and strategically placing Irene in a position for them to meet one another. The entire book is a classic love story, depicting the realities of life where ups and downs are everyday norms, and a sign of moving forward.
