Chapter 91-100
Summary

Natasha and “Fitzgerald” talk about the events that transpired after Samuel’s arrest, and he thinks he can do something to help. He will first see a judge for the reversal of the Voluntary Removal so that they do not leave that night, and then file an appeal with the Board of Immigration Appeal. She decides against asking for specifics as her nature dictates and lets the lawyer handle the case. Daniel is trying to understand the things that his father is thinking; as he believes that he will always remain “the second son” he is even after Charlie does the worst. He uses a can of Coke to ice his throbbing lips, and he thinks about his life, wondering if Natasha might have been right when she accused him of looking for someone to save him. His father calls on him, and he talks to him about the importance of a good future, going to Yale and becoming a doctor. He also says that nothing can ever happen between him and Natasha, the girl he brought to the store.

The narrator talks about “Dae Hyun Bae: A Dad’s History”, unveiling the thoughts of Daniel’s father and the life he had as a boy whilst living in South Korea. Natasha calls her ex-boyfriend Rob and asks why he cheated on her. At the same time, she also asks him not to cheat on Kelly, after which she wants to find Daniel — who is also thinking about Natasha, and decides to go to the lawyer’s building thinking fate might allow their paths to cross again. Natasha sees a couple arguing at the entrance of the subway, and believes that they are still in love, or were at some point, but cannot tell by just looking at them. Daniel is at the subway and he observes as some people dance to music from a boom box before the subway police scatters them. Natasha also sees the dancers and wonders whether they have jobs or better things to do. She even thinks about the reasons Daniel would give concerning them, and she is right for he sees a purpose for the dance.

Daniel sees the couple seen by Natasha earlier, but this time they are making out. He hopes that their love will last forever. Natasha is close to Daniel’s store when she sees a girl playing the violin while standing on a milk crate. Someone from the pawn shop comes out and tells the girl that time is over, and she gives him the two dollars given by Daniel and Natasha at two different times.

Analysis

Fitzgerald is confident in his skills, and is not shy of showing his pride. He has experience in immigration cases, and he has a plan of helping the Kingsley family. All he needs is time to execute his plan and set it in motion. It is clear that he values family, for he has only unpacked the framed picture of his family. Therefore, his desire to help is genuine and professional. Dae Hyun Bae understands the pain brought by poverty, and he cannot allow his children to become failures in life. A better future is the only thing that matters to him, and all other things are never as important. He already knows the things that Daniel wants, but he decides to ignore them since has a preplanned future for his sons, and that future involves them becoming doctors and not whatever else they may want to pursue. His experience in South Korea is enough reason for him to push his children into becoming doctors, so they can be successful in life.

The events that Natasha and Daniel separately witness, including the couple, the dancers, and the girl playing the violin, portray their similarities and differences. They are caring, for they donate to the girl, and they have love on their minds when they see the couple at the subway. Besides that, Natasha already foretells Daniel considering his conclusions after seeing the dancers in the subway station. This shows that they are growing fond of each other, and their effort to look for one another portrays their deep love.
