Chapter 12
Summary

Summer returns and Jem will be turning 12 soon. His adolescent traits are starting to show; depicted by him telling Scout to stop bothering him and start acting like a ‘lady' instead of ‘girl' as he used to say. Dill writes to say he can't come and with it goes the hopes for a fun summer. He says that he has a new stepfather and that they were going to build a fishing boat together. He assures Scout he loves her and promises to come for her when he gets money. Atticus is called to an emergency session of state legislature. In his absence, Calpurnia takes the kids to a black church, and they are received with a mixture of kindness and prejudice. The discrimination is an eye-opening experience; prompting them to discuss education religion and the differences between blacks and whites. When they get home, the sight of Aunt Alexandra waiting for them catches them by surprise.

Analysis

Since the story proceeds over a span of three years, the author illustrates the physical and mental changes that the children go through. The children and the reader are reminded that even in the midst of differences, common ground still exists, be it between brother and sister, men and women or people of different races. The children’s personality differences are depicted when Scout comments on Jem’s upcoming 12th birthday and the moodiness that he has developed of late. Even though they regularly disagree on several matters, their family bond id always evident. The conversation between the Calpurnia and the children on their way home from church clearly indicates how much they have developed. The children get to learn how different their life experiences are from Calpurnia’s even though they have lived together for a significant amount of time. It also shows how Calpurnia’s character is divided, as she acts as a bridge between the African Americans and the Maycomb whites.
