Chapter 27
Summary

By October, life starts going back to its normal self, but the Finches cannot seem to get Tom out of their minds especially when everyone around them is talking about how he gets employed but loses his job almost immediately. It was a Work Project Administration, a government program put up at the time of Great Depression, and Scout can't help but wonder how he got himself fired. Ewell, however, blames Atticus for his misfortune. Another scenario takes place in Judge Taylor's house where someone broke into the house but the Judge did not see his face. Everyone was certain that it was Bob Ewell. The third scenario is Bob's harassment of Hellen Robinson. Hellen had gotten a job in Link Deas' house and to get there she had to pass the Ewell's where she gets harassed. Deas goes to Ewell and threatens him to end his harassment towards Hellen.

As the chapter ends, scout talks about Maycomb's plan for Halloween which is to be hosted at the high school with activities for both adults and children, for instance, a performance titled Maycomb County. The children are supposed to present some of the county's agricultural product and Scout is chosen to be the ham.

Analysis

References to Bob Ewell haunts Scout even though she says life is settling back to normal.  The tension begins to build as she relates to Bob Ewell’s run-ins with other people, and it is evident that further misdeeds by Bob are still on the way. This chapter provides more information about Bob Ewell, and he begins to appear as an evil person.
