Chapter 2 Apples
Summary

At 10 years old, Glennon is attending CCD to be taught about God. This time, her teacher is explaining the creation of humans to the children. Glennon is confused and asks a question, but is quickly dismissed. The teacher goes on to describe the series of events leading up to God casting Adam and Eve out of heaven, concluding that all humans suffer because Eve was ungrateful and wanted more than she was supposed to.

Analysis

The story told by the teacher reflects how Glennon feels about her own life. She was taught not to want things and to be happy simply because she was supposed to be. The teacher conveniently leaves out several parts of the story of creation, so as to cast Eve in a worse light and, presumably, to scare the children into being grateful and “good”. The teacher believes that it is a sin to want to know more than what one is supposed to. By silencing Glennon’s curiosity, she is demonstrating her unwillingness to comply with her desire to know more.
