Chapter 5 Tick Marks
Summary

Glennon discusses high school and the people that were known as the “Golden Ones”, who were always members of the homecoming court. While she was not considered one, she occasionally spent time with them, allowing others to think she was “golden”. This later allowed her to come within two votes of being elected to the homecoming court herself. As one of the people counting the ballots, she was able to rig the election.

Analysis

“Vote for the Golden Ones. They have followed directions perfectly, they are what we are all supposed to be” (Doyle 25). This unspoken rule relates to Glennon’s past issues and how she tried to solve them. She wanted to be perfect in the eyes of everybody else so much that she was willing to cheat. Although being popular in high school does not matter in the long run, this reflects the similar situations in Glennon’s life, such as her alcohol abuse and bulimia. These were all products of her sensitivity.
