The book set in the Victorian era. Queen Victoria was coroneted in 1837 when Emily was just 15 years old. The people who lived then cared about the poor and the less privileged. The artists and innovative thinkers believed it was their responsibility to show a good example. The era lasted only until 1901 only to be branded "prudish," "repressed," and "old-fashioned." Changes took place both politically and philosophically. There was development in workers unions in labor movements and emergence of great theorists that challenged beliefs. Christianity was widespread as an institution where religious beliefs and strict social order was the norm. People started asking questions regarding religion. Theorists like Sigmund Freud began challenging some beliefs. Women obeyed their husbands. The primary goal in life was respect and sexual decency as the norm. Variance from the standard criticized ostracized. People had one culture and society did not expect anything different. Emily’s early upbringing influenced her perspective on morality. Wuthering Heights in a way portrayed society contra to expectations then. Protecting the wealth within the social circles was the norm. Emily being a pastor’s daughter and the father practicing Christianity with logic rather than euphoria brought up children that are creative and balanced.
