You Are a Badass

Chapter 4

All humans have an ego. However, some egos are bigger and more impactful than others. Ego plays a critical role in denying some people an opportunity to achieve their dreams. Sincero says that there are people who spend a lot of their time wanting to be other people and as a result, failing to develop who they are. She says, "The Big Snooze operates according to your limiting false beliefs. This is the garbage that was stuffed into your subconscious as a kid that doesn't ring true for you, as well as the decisions you've made about yourself that are less-than-flattering or empowering".  When people pursue other interests and forget who they are, they lose opportunities, and that may work against their personal happiness. Sincero says that there are people with the wrong mentality regarding who they want to be against who they are.

While there is a need for people to change various aspects of their lives and start living positively, Sincero views personal ego as the threat to this. Ego makes people fixated on some positions or events, even when these positions are working against their progress. Accepting a person's situation and working to achieve a person's desires is the recipe for success. However, the ego, which tends to make people focus on one idea, is dangerous and leads to destruction. Sincero describes the situation as “an overprotective Italian mother who not only doesn’t want you ever to go outside, but who wants you to live with her forever." The desire for people to maintain the status quo is counterproductive and does not work in favor of anyone. As a result of their ego, many people are not capable of changing and growing. That, in the long run, leads to either deterioration or stagnation.
